Once in front of the judge, you have exactly three options:
- Comply with the pre-trial mediation” or “resolution conference” and settle your debt with the debt collector’s lawyer outside the court-room and without a judge present, on that day. – VERY BAD IDEA
- Approach the bench and ask for a future trial date, especially if you are disputing any part of the debt. – GOOD IDEA
- Or, ask the court for more time to hire a consumer lawyer – BEST IDEA
- Conduct an out-of-court mediation – A GOOD IDEA ONLY IF YOU HAVE A CONSUMER LAWYER
Should you get a lawyer?
A consumer lawyer will save you lots of money, lots of time, and restore your credit history. There is no good reason not to get a consumer lawyer to handle your debt collection case. And this comes from a lawyer who thinks traffic ticket attorney’s are a waste of money.
